What is Pack-size normalization?

Pack-size normalization converts case, box, and each pricing to a common per-unit basis so a hotel can compare prices fairly across suppliers.

Pack-size normalization restates prices on a common per-unit basis — per towel, per jug, per pound, per bottle — so that a case of 24 and a box of 5 can be compared honestly. Without it, a cheaper-looking case can quietly cost more per unit than the expensive-looking one next to it.

Why case pricing hides the real number.

Hotel suppliers quote in whatever pack they ship. The same bath towel arrives as a case, a bale, or a dozen. The same bleach arrives in fours and in sixes. The sticker price on the invoice is a case price, and case prices are not comparable to each other in any useful way.

This is also how a price increase disguises itself. A supplier keeps the case price flat and drops the pack from 24 units to 20 — the invoice looks unchanged, and the item just became 20% more expensive.

A worked example.

Bath towels, same specification, two suppliers. Supplier A lists a case of 24 at $48.00. Supplier B lists a box of 5 at $11.00. Supplier B has the smaller number on the page.

Normalized, Supplier A is $2.00 a towel and Supplier B is $2.20 — 10% more per towel for the option that looked cheaper. The same effect runs in reverse with bleach 5L: a case of 4 at $73.60 is $18.40 a jug, while a case of 6 at $105.00 is $17.50 a jug. The bigger sticker price carries the lower unit cost.

At one Niagara Falls hotel, comparing normalized unit prices across eight suppliers surfaced 24 comparable-supplier opportunities worth an estimated $796 a month. Whether any of them is worth switching for — service, delivery days, minimum orders, quality — is the team’s call. Atrium only shows the comparison.

The units that matter in a hotel.

Normalization is only useful if the chosen unit is the one the hotel actually consumes. Towels and pillowcases normalize to the piece. Bleach and detergent normalize to the liter. Coffee normalizes to the pound, not the bag, because bag weights differ between roasters.

Beverages are the awkward case: a case of 24 twelve-ounce cans and a case of 12 twenty-ounce bottles are not comparable per container at all, only per ounce. Getting the denominator right is most of the work — the arithmetic afterwards is one division.

What usually goes wrong.

  • The unit of measure changes silently between orders: case to each, or each to sleeve
  • Catchweight items are billed by weight but ordered by case, so the two never line up
  • The pack size lives in the product description, where no spreadsheet formula can reach it
  • Two suppliers describe the same item differently, so a comparison never gets attempted
